Crime in Cedar Falls increased 2.1% in 2014; however the 5 year average shows a 15.5% decline. The city saw increases in thefts, vandalisms and burglaries. There were declines in OWI’s, disorderliness, drug violations and assaults.
Thefts +32.6% (524 to 695)
Vandalism +19.8% (192 to 230)
Burglaries +15.5% (110 to 127)
OWI -41.7% (206 to 120)
Disorderly -27.0% (141 to 103)
Drug Violations -27.0% (211 to 157)
Assaults -8.1% (111 to 102)
The largest increase was in the theft category. Part of the reason for this increase was a 56% increase in shoplifting cases, from 175 in 2013 to 273 in 2014. The category with the largest decrease was in the OWI (Operating While Intoxicate).
“The five-year decline in crime is a fantastic trend. We have a low crime rate in Cedar Falls partially due to the great communication and cooperation between the citizens and the police officers. “ says Police Chief Jeff Olson.
