[ARCHIVED] Counterfeit travelers checks passed at area businesses.

The Cedar Falls Police are warning area businesses to use caution when accepting travelers checks. Counterfeit $100 American Express Travelers Cheque’s were passed by several individuals to businesses located at College Square Mall, Crossroads Mall and Black Hawk Village on November 13, 2012. The suspects purchased low priced items and then paid with the counterfeit checks. One suspect was described as a heavy set black female in her 20’s with longer hair with bright orange tips.

Businesses should be aware of the security features of travelers checks and always ask for ID when accepting them. If there is any problem with a check or it is suspected to be a fake, call the bank that issued the check. All banks are required to keep files of these transactions.

Anyone with information can contact the Cedar Falls or Waterloo Police or the Cedar Valley crime Stoppers at 855-300-8477.
