Sound the alarm: it’s time for the Great American Fire Drill! During Fire Prevention Week 2007, NFPA and Cedar Falls Fire Rescue are asking kids and families all across Cedar Falls to practice their home fire escape plans. Just how big will the Great American Fire Drill be? With your help, we’re hoping that every family in Cedar Falls will practice their home fire safety plan.
Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13 this year. Firefighters encourage each family to develop a fire safety plan. Each member of the family should be involved in the planning and no one should be left out when it comes time to practice your plan. Draw out your plan and explain to the entire family. Then actually practice your plan with each family member hustling to the outside family meeting place. After you have practiced make sure to discuss the plan again to decide if the plan worked. Don’t put your plan on a shelf though, if people come to visit they should know the plan, the babysitter should know the plan, grandparents, sleepover friends, everyone. Make sure to review your plan at least once a year. Test your smoke detector, change the battery, and clean that smoke detector after all it has been working 24 hours a day 7 days a week just to protect you.
Don’t forget to visit with Cedar Falls Firefighters at College Square Mall during Fire Prevention Week for some special activities and prizes. We look forward to seeing and hearing from each of you.
