To provide a safe walking surface for pedestrians, property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks abutting their property. City ordinance states this must be done in a reasonable amount of time following the snowfall. If the owner fails to do so within a reasonable time, the Public Works Department may have the natural accumulations of snow or ice removed without notice to the property owner. The cost of removal will be assessed against the property as taxes.
Residents are reminded when snow is being cleared from driveways, sidewalks or parking lots to be sure it is not deposited onto city streets. This practice is prohibited by city ordinance. Improper snow removal can cause hazardous situations for both pedestrians and vehicles.
