The Fall Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Drop-off Event will take place on Saturday, September 16, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m. at the Cedar Falls Public Works Complex located at 2200 Technology Parkway in Cedar Falls. Registration is required to participate in this event. Register by clicking this link. Registration will close at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15. All participants are required to register prior to arrival.
The Black Hawk County Solid Waste Management Commission is collaborating with the City of Cedar Falls, the City of Waterloo, and other community organizations to sponsor this drop-off event for Black Hawk County residents to safely manage hazardous materials and electronics from their homes and garages (some fees may apply).
Accepted Items:
- Household items including lawn chemicals, **batteries (all varieties - except Alkaline), fluorescent light bulbs (compact and tube limit 10 tubes four feet or longer), propane tanks, old gasoline, mercury thermometers, and clogged aerosol cans (including aerosol spray paint) will be accepted from residents for safe disposal.
- Flat panel TVs and computer monitors, computer accessories, game systems, vacuums, VCR/DVD players, radios, holiday lights, tabletop/floor lamps, and more will be recycled at no cost. All hard drives will be shredded after the event.
- Each vehicle/household can recycle two Cathode Ray Tube containing (not flat panel) computer monitors/televisions for free. Additional CRTs are $5 each. CRTs are in older TVs and computer monitors with a big bump in the back.
Please bring exact cash only. Bills larger than $20 will not be accepted. Participants should review the complete list of accepted items and fees at wastetrac.org and contact the Waste Trac Education Team (before September 15) with questions.
**NOT ACCEPTED at this event: Paint; laundry detergents, soaps, cosmetics, and medications; Alkaline batteries, automotive oils, oil filters, and antifreeze; grills, lawnmowers, tires, furniture, or non-hazardous waste; fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, radioactive materials, asbestos, or ammunition; any container larger than 5 gallons (no drums); appliances (including microwaves, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, water heaters, refrigerators, light ballasts, etc.); items from schools, businesses, farms, churches, non-profits, or governmental entities (several vendors have routes locally to assist with business-related materials. Although not accepted at this event, tires, furniture, carpet, grills, and appliances can be taken to the Black Hawk County Sanitary Landfill (wastetrac.org/hours-of-operation/), or contact your city about their bulk item policy (wastetrac.org/city-services/). You can also contact a local scrap metal company (metal items only).

Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to make this event a success. Volunteers (ages 16+) can help out for the entire length of the event from 7:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. or for a morning shift from 7:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Both light-duty and heavy-lifting tasks are available. During an average event, volunteers typically help unload more than 60,000 pounds of electronics – in addition to home chemicals, propane tanks, car batteries, and much more.
Citizens interested in volunteering are asked to register here or call (319) 234-8115 by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023, so adequate volunteer supplies and food can be ordered. The Commission is coordinating and registering all the volunteers for this event. No walk-in volunteers are allowed. Snacks, lunch, and beverages will be provided for volunteers.
