Cedar Falls Public Safety is excited to host a Youth Fire Academy from July 20 through July 21, 2023. Participants will learn about fire prevention, first aid, careers in firefighting and emergency medical service, EMS operations, and more. They will also be able to get hands-on experience including flowing water from a fire engine.
This is a two-day course that will be held on Thursday, July 20, and Friday, July 21. Both days will be from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and take place at the Cedar Falls Public Safety Center (4600 South Main Street). It is free and open to students, ages 8-12. Students must live in Cedar Falls or attend a Cedar Falls school to participate. Register at www.cedarfalls.com/youthfireacademy by July 18 to attend. Spaces are limited. During the course, parents may drop off their students or stay during the session if they wish. A complimentary meal of hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and cookies will be provided for attendees during both days of the course.*
All graduates of the Cedar Falls Youth Fire Academy will receive a certificate and a t-shirt.
"We are looking forward to bringing this fun and educational event to our community because it really gets young students interested in fire service while also teaching them how to increase their situational awareness and knowledge of fire safety so they know what to do in the event of an emergency," said Cedar Falls Fire Chief John Zolondek. "Creating the Youth Fire Academy has been a goal of our department for a while now and I am excited it has taken off. Kids are always so thrilled to see fire trucks but this goes a step further and gets them directly involved by providing the opportunity to interact with our great team, try new things, and learn."
"We thank our partners at Fareway on South Main Street, Brad Jacobson State Farm, and the Shirt Shack for helping to make this event possible."
