[ARCHIVED] Press Release - 06/12/2008 8:00 a.m.

Safety issues continue to be of paramount concern in the City of Cedar Falls due to extensive flooding damage. Several roads have been weaken or collapsed due to flooding, and much of the sanitary sewer system isn’t working.

All residents are urged to continue water conservation efforts in order to prevent additional pressure upon the stressed collection system. Residents north of the Cedar River should not use water.

The rains overnight in Cedar Falls and the areas upstream complicate matters significantly. At this time, it is unclear whether roads, bridges and other infrastructure are safe for travel. All roads leading into the North Cedar area are closed.

The evacuation order is still in effect in the downtown and North Cedar areas, as conditions are still extremely hazardous. Cedar Falls police and the National Guard are securing the affected areas. The levy is holding firm.

City officials currently are inspecting city systems and assessing damage.

No volunteers are needed at this time.

More developments will be announced by noon today (Thursday, June 12).
