[ARCHIVED] Cedar Falls Weekly Construction Updates: July 31, 2020

To help our community stay updated on current ongoing street construction projects in the area, the City of Cedar Falls is launching weekly updates. This includes a brief notice on the current status of the project and what residents can expect in the upcoming days. This information will be shared both on the City website under ’Our City News’ and on the Cedar Falls engineering page at www.cedarfalls.com/engineering as well as the City Facebook and Twitter pages (@citycf).

Construction Updates: July 31, 2020


Downtown Streetscape (project located on 2nd/3rd Street):

Parking areas on the north and south side of West 3rd are complete. Paving will continue at the alley accesses both north and south August 1. Sidewalk pavers will begin the week of August 10, one week later than expected. This was a result of some additional concrete work that must be installed prior to the pavers. Intent is to open to traffic the week of August 3. Access to the alleys will be available off Washington on Monday with full opening of 3rd to traffic by August 5. West 2nd St. will be completely closed to traffic starting Monday, August 3. Demolition, sanitary sewer, and water main work will resume the week of August 3.

West 1st Street/Hwy 57 - Phase 2 (project located West 1st Street/HWY 57-Franklin Street to Hudson Road): 

Head-to-head traffic on north lanes switching to head-to-head on the south lanes during the week of August 3. Paving operations from Ellen St. to Division St. to be completed this week. Sidewalk, driveways and retaining wall placement continue along the south side up to Francis St. Traffic scheduled to switch August 5 between N. College St. and Olive St. - this will switch traffic to the southern lanes (head-to-head traffic) for pavement removal on the northern lanes between N. College St. and Walnut St.

West 12th Street Reconstruction (project located West 12th - Tremont to College Streets, Walnut - 11th to 12th Streets):

West 12th Street is currently closed from Tremont to College St. Pavement stripping and topsoil and sod placement occurring this week. Miscellaneous sidewalk and driveway approaches are ongoing. Once this work is completed, 12th St. will be opened back up for traffic. After this, work will begin on Walnut St. with notices to be sent out to adjacent property owners for street closure on Walnut from 11th to 12th.

Expected project completion date: Fall 2020

Cedar Falls Permeable Alley Project (project located 4th/5th Street on Tremont and Iowa, 22nd and Seerley on Tremont and Franklin):

Alley on 4th/5th Street on Tremont and Iowa is closed. The alley on 22nd Street is also closed temporarily. 4th/5th Alley has both collars poured as well as approaches. The contractor is working on grading/topsoil and rock driveways.  A single driveway approach as well as curb and gutter to be removed and replaced next week.  The 22nd/Seerley alley is rocked and subdrain installed, Contractor has poured half of the Alley and is forming up the other half.

Additional 2020 Annual Street Construction Updates (all projects expected to be completed by Fall 2020):

26th Street - Iowa Street to Tremont Street: Construction has begun on this project. The street is still open for traffic currently. Areas of single lanes closures and flaggers directing traffic may occur for ongoing work prior to paving operations. Edge milling occurred this week, with pavement prep for paving scheduled for next week.

Lilac Lane - Rownd St. to McClain Dr.: Street is currently closed from McClain - halfway to Rownd.  Topsoil and Sod installed this week for Stage 1 construction. This stage of this street is nearly completed and will open back up for traffic beginning August 3rd. Stage 2 scheduled to begin week of August 3 - Lilac will be closed during this stage. 

Madison Street- Valley Park to Waterloo Road: Street is currently closed from Valley Park to Whiteway. Topsoil and Sod installed this week for Stage 1 construction. This stage of this street is nearly completed and will open back up for traffic beginning August 4th. Stage 2 scheduled to begin week of August 3 - Madison will be closed during this stage. 

11th Street - Division Street to College Street: Street is currently closed from Division to Catherine. Driveways and Curbs work has been completed, pavement has been milled this week with asphalt overlay being placed the week of August 3rd.

Union Road - 1st St./HWY 57 to N.C.L: Currently there is a single lane closure with flaggers and pilot car alternating stop/go to monitor and direct traffic. Milling and Cold-in-Place recycled asphalt operations were completed this week. Grading and prep is now occurring at intersections and drives. Paving tentatively scheduled for week of August 3rd.

Note, construction on the following streets listed as part of the 2020 Annual Street Program are complete: Clearview Drive (Primerose to Orchard), Chateau Court (4th Street to Cul-de-sac), Holmes Drive (4th Street to Holmes Junior High), Carlton Drive (Lilac Lane to Maplewood Drive), Seerley Blvd. (Valley Park to Melrose Drive), Ashland Ave. (Acorn Lane to Pin Oak Drive).
