[ARCHIVED] Cedar Falls Weekly Construction Update: July 17, 2020

To help our community stay updated on current ongoing street construction projects in the area, the City of Cedar Falls is launching weekly updates. This includes a brief notice on the current status of the project and what residents can expect in the upcoming days. This information will be shared both on the City website under ’Our City News’ and on the Cedar Falls engineering page at www.cedarfalls.com/112/Engineering-Services, as well as the City Facebook and Twitter pages (@citycf).

Cedar Falls Weekly Construction Update: July 17, 2020


Downtown Streetscape (project located on 2nd/3rd Street):

3rd Street from Washington State Street and West 2nd Street from Main to Alley are currently closed. Panel patching on East 3rd Street was completed on July 16 with remaining centerline paving to be completed on July 17. W. 3rd Street mainline paving was completed on July 16. Parking areas will be completed the week of July 20 with sidewalks to follow. The intent is to open to traffic the week of August 3. West 2nd Street will be closed to traffic from Main Street to the east side of the alley beginning July 21 to allow for demolition, sanitary sewer, and water main work to begin. 

Expected project completion date: Fall 2020

West 1st Street/Hwy 57 - Phase 2 (project located West 1st Street/HWY 57-Franklin Street to Hudson Road): 

Currently, head-to-head traffic is in place on northbound lanes. Underground utility work, mostly sanitary, continuing along the south side up to Ellen Street. Temporary paving crossover in the next week will shift traffic to start on northbound lanes near Walnut while crews finish south side near Ellen. Crews have begun prepping and staking for retaining wall installs along south side W. 1st St from Olive to Pearl Streets. The next construction meeting scheduled for July 20th at 1:30 pm.

Expected project completion date: Fall 2021

West 12th Street Reconstruction (project located West 12th - Tremont to College Streets, Walnut - 11th to 12th Streets):

West 12th Street is currently closed from Tremont to College Street. Traffic can detour on W. 11th or W. 13th Streets. Mainline paving on West 12th Street has been completed. Storm intakes and sanitary manholes are being set to final grades. Concrete replacement panels will be occurring the week of July 20(weather depending). Afterward, driveway and alley approaches will be poured, as well as sidewalks.

Cedar Falls Permeable Alley Project (project located 4th/5th Street on Tremont and Iowa, 22nd and Seerley on Tremont and Franklin):

Both alleys listed above remain closed. The alley on 22nd Street will be closed starting the week of July 20. 4th/5th alley has the west side alley approach formed as well as 5th Street tie in. It is scheduled to be poured by the end of the week, possibly the first part of next week (July 20). Next week, sidewalks and driveways are being removed to be replaced. 22nd/Seerley alley is now closed as excavation has begun. 22nd will be closed temporarily to make a connection from the alley to the storm intake across 22nd Street.

Additional 2020 Annual Street Construction Updates (all projects expected to be completed by Fall 2020):

Lilac Lane - Rownd St. to McClain Dr.: Street is currently closed from McClain - halfway to Rownd.  Subbase is installed and paving is scheduled to begin on July 17th or early next week (July 20).

Madison Street- Valley Park to Waterloo Road: Street is currently closed from Valley Park to Whiteway. Subbase is installed and paving is scheduled to begin the week of July 20.

11th Street - Division Street to College Street: Street is currently closed from Division to Catherine. Subbase for the curb is done. Next will be to pour curb and gutter which is scheduled for the week of July 20. 

Union Road - 1st St./HWY 57 to N.C.L: Construction starting the week of July 20. The contractor will begin driveway approaches. Once complete, work on culverts will begin. There will be a single lane closure during culvert work operations. Flaggers with alternating stop/go to monitor and direct traffic during this operation. 

Note, construction on the following streets listed as part of the 2020 Annual Street Program are complete: Clearview Drive (Primerose to Orchard), Chateau Court (4th Street to Cul-de-sac), Holmes Drive (4th Street to Holmes Junior High), Carlton Drive (Lilac Lane to Maplewood Drive), Seerley Blvd. (Valley Park to Melrose Drive), Ashland Ave. (Acorn Lane to Pin Oak Drive).

Construction on 26th Street-Iowa Street to Tremont Street has not yet started.
