The City of Cedar Falls has issued the following urgent announcements:
According to flood forecasts provided by the National Weather Service, the river level is expected to exceed the top of the flood levy. Sandbagging of the levy area will be taking place soon to protect the downtown area; however, merchants and residents in the downtown area need to prepare for possible evacuation later Tuesday.
Cedar Falls officials are urging downtown residents and merchants to prepare for evacuation by taking all steps necessary to safeguard their property. The area should be closed for business immediately. Cedar Falls police are blocking off downtown area immediately. There will be no one allowed in the area.
Further updates will be forthcoming.
Volunteers may report to the North parking lot of the UNI Dome to assist with sandbags beginning at 11:00 a.m. Volunteers must NOT travel downtown or go near the levy. Transportation will be provided to volunteers where help is needed.
People must stay away from the flooded areas and to avoid sightseeing as it hinders public safety and rescue efforts.
Cedar Falls Utilities is operating under a contingency plan to maintain power to customers. Customer Service is operating out of City Hall at this time.
Regular, non-emergency services at City Hall are suspended at this time.
Citizens residing south of 12th Street are urged to conserve water usage due to flooding in the sanitary sewer system.
