[ARCHIVED] Cedar Falls Public Safety Performs Ice Rescue

press release image

On February 23rd, 2020 at 6:24 p.m., Cedar Falls Public Safety was advised that two subjects had fallen through the ice at Big Woods Lake.  Cedar Falls Public Safety, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, and Mercy One EMS arrived on scene.  Two subjects were in the water and were unable to self-rescue.  The victims were able to communicate with responders from approximately 40 yards from the shore.

Public Safety Officers with ice rescue equipment went out on the water and brought both teens to safety.  The victims were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

As temperatures fluctuate, Cedar Falls Public Safety is encouraging the public to use caution near the ice and water during this time of year.

The north boat ramp of Big Woods Lake has been barricaded and closed by the City of Cedar Falls following this incident.
