Trick or Treat Safety Tips
Trick or treating is exciting, but it is important to take precautions to ensure your family stays safe.
Make sure your child is wearing reflective clothing or fasten reflective tape to their costume if they are going out after dark. Costumes should be properly fitted, fire-resistant and children should have comfortable shoes to walk in. Use flashlights or glowsticks instead of candles and do not allow children around any open flame. Avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods and ensure that you and your child obey all crosswalk signals and signs. An adult should always accompany young children during trick or treating. Teach your child to never enter a stranger's home or car and instruct them not to eat any treats before you return home so that an adult can check them first.
Children and adults are both reminded to put electronic devices away while walking and stay alert for drivers while crossing the street. Drivers should also make sure to put their electronic devices away while driving and enter and exit driveways and alleyways carefully. Discourage new, inexperienced drivers from driving on Halloween.
When buying Halloween make-up, make sure it is nontoxic and test it in a small area first. Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritations.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
