City officials are watching the River levels and forecasts to take appropriate action. At this time, some residents and businesses in Northern Cedar Falls are experiencing flooding. Several streets north of the Cedar River are closed at this time. Information is available about what streets are affected at certain River levels and what to do to prepare for a flood, at City Hall or on the City’s website at www.cedarfalls.com/flood. If you have questions, please feel free to call 319-243-2700.
The Cedar Falls levee system was raised 2 feet from the previous wall flood protection elevation. The new flood protection elevation is 104.9’. The City’s contractor has completed raising the flood protection of the levee. The remaining work includes finalizing wall aesthetics, recreational trail placement, and installation of wall lighting. This will be completed by summer 2019.
Sand and sandbags continue to be available at the Bluff Street Complex, free of charge. The entrance is at 16th and State Street. The sand and bags are located near the scrap metal bunkers on the east side of the facility. Please bring a shovel.
Flood clean-up kits are located in the porch at Fire Station #2, 722 W. Lone Tree Rd.
A collection of damaged property will take place for residents in areas impacted by flooding. A curbside collection will take place and disposal fees will be waived at the transfer station for those residents impacted. The collection will take place beginning March 18th and will continue through April 5th. Please place items at the curb and separate appliances, liquids, metal objects and furniture from any demolition materials. When possible, please use containers for sheet rock and small debris.
