When did you start with the City of Cedar Falls?
I began in March 2001, part-time in the City Finance office before transitioning to full-time. I moved to the Rec in October 2009 after their previous admin retired.
What is your favorite part about your time at the Rec?
My favorite thing is definitely the people that I work with. We are like a family and everyone helps each other. When we create new programs or activities, the entire team throws in their ideas. Our Rec members are also so devoted and such awesome folks. This job has allowed me to connect with a lot of people from the community. It is a really tight-knit group especially the morning patrons. When we open the door at 5:00 a.m., there is usually a line of people ready to come in.
Everything we do here is fun. It amazes me to watch my co-workers and see their wheels turning to develop new programs and find ways to get all ages involved. I'm excited about retirement but sad about leaving all my friends.
What are the most memorable projects you have participated in?
I enjoyed being involved in the Parks and Recreation Commission. I'm so impressed with the work those individuals do as volunteers and the impact they make in our area. They have such a wealth of knowledge and are so generous with their time. I am going to miss them.
Another project I have enjoyed working on is Veterans Park. There are dedicated bricks in the park and I send the Memorial Company all the names to be cut. My husband is a veteran so it is a cause very close to my heart.
Above all, I remember the flood of 2008. I had been in Cedar Falls for 13 years and I've always known this was a good community. However, the way citizens came together during that time by volunteering and helping their neighbors amazed me. It truly warmed my heart. I feel very fortunate to have been part of that.
