The discussions and need for a city Recreation Center began in 1973 and with that came the lengthy decision making process on where it should be located. At this time an agreement could not be met on providing a new facility.
The first move was to take the offices and activity rooms on the second floor from the 2nd Street site and move them to the Public Library at 524 Main in late 1973.
Public opinion was put to test and various locations were considered including Birdsall and Central Parks. In 1992 the demolition of the Old Main Street School which was then the current Recreation Center, was torn down and space made way for the construction of a new Recreational Facility.
The current Recreation Center opened in January 1993 at 110 E. 13th Street and in January 2005 an addition opened at the Recreation Center to double the size of the facility.
