The Major Incident Response Team was formed in 1983 as a specialized operational intervention unit, which can be activated to resolve non-routine police problems.
The unit requires strict discipline, physical excellence, a high degree of mental fitness, and the ability to excel in the assigned expertise.
Situations that may require the activation of the M.I.R.T. team:
- Armed suicidal persons
- Barricaded persons
- Civil disturbance
- Dignitary protection
- Hostage situations
- Sniper situations
- Terrorist incidents
- Warrant service on felony arrests involving the possible use of a weapon
- Any other incident deemed necessary by the chief of police or other designee
