Cedar Falls Names Acting Public Safety Director and Acting Police Chief

Following the retirement of Cedar Falls Public Safety Director Jeff Olson on March 10, 2022, the City of Cedar Falls has announced Cedar Falls Police Chief Craig Berte as Acting Public Safety Director. Acting Director Berte assumed this role starting on March 10, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. and will serve in this capacity until such a time that a permanent replacement is named.

The appointment was made by Cedar Falls City Administrator Ron Gaines in accordance with Section 2-920 of the City of Cedar Falls Code of Ordinances.

Additionally, per Section 2-949 (a) of the City Code of Ordinance, Acting Director Berte has named Cedar Falls Captain Mark Howard as the Acting Chief of Police. Captain Howard will assume this role starting on March 14, 2022, at 8:00 a.m.

A search for the permanent Public Safety Director is anticipated to begin on March 21, 2022.

The City will continue to provide updates on this process to the public as needed.
